The idea of opening a bike shop in Lancaster started in July 1989 after a mountain bike race in Vermont. Mike Farrington, mountain bike extraordinaire and founder of the company, needed a more specialized place where he could nurture his passion for mountain biking in central Pennsylvania. He knew he could open a shop better than any other store in Lancaster. His goal: focusing on customer service and maintenance.
After only five months, Green Mountain Cyclery opened its doors for business in a 350 ft2 store in Akron, PA. Since then, the company has become one of the most well-known state-of-the-art bike shops in central Pennsylvania always improving itself and offering the most comprehensive services every cyclist needs: from providing hitches and racks for cars to classes on how to repair and maintain your own bike.
1990: We opened the doors of our store with a significant supply of Kona, Marin, Raleigh, and many other trick parts. That year, we also created our first team and after more than twenty years we still enjoy riding our bikes all together. Mike ran his first “The Rage in the Bush” mountain bike competition and the US Junior national champion came to our shop to buy his first bike.
1991-1994: In 1991, we moved to our current location in Ephrata, renting half of the building. That allowed us to work better in a more spacious area offering an even more exclusive service to our customers. That summer, Brent Kametz joined our team and he still offers his expertise to our company after more than twenty years.
During those years, Mike joined the amazing Big Timber, a mountain bike race that he ran for 10 years in a row. Our team continued to grow dominating the mountain bike scene and winning one class at the 24 hours of Canaan race in 1992.
1995-1996: These two years are memorable for Green Mountain Cyclery. We purchased the current Green Mountain Cyclery building and our team became even bigger with a new official member in the crew: Jennifer, who married Mike in 1995. The bike team continued to rack up wins at many major races and the shop expanded even more.
1997-2000: We grew into so much more than just mountain bikes. We fielded the fastest BMX team in the region and won dozens of the local road races. We also became more involved in the local riding scene, helping with many charity rides. In 1998, we hired our first full time employee who had just graduated from Barnett’s Bicycle Institute and still shares his passion with us. At 12.45 p.m. on May 6th 1998, our family became bigger with the birth of a new little racer: Laird Farrington. Our little champion won his first bike race five years later and he is still a big aficionado of mountain bikes.
Recent years: In 2011, we reached a record both in and out of the shop with amazing results that helped us grow and improve ourselves. 2012 brought another record breaker for us as well as terrific trips and great riding! We also donated hundreds of hours building the pump track and skills course for the Boy Scouts at Camp Mack. Tom Lausch joined our crew as a full time employee and our resident “roadie”. We also started a steady collaboration with the Italian company Bianchi which allowed us to include their beautiful bicycles to our shop.
2017 is shaping up to be our craziest year yet!
